Our Program
Day support that happens out in the community.
Enable is developing a non-center-based day support program for adults, offered through Virginia's Community Engagement service model. Instead of spending the day in a building, people learn and participate in ordinary community places.
In plain language
What community engagement means
Community engagement is support for adults to take part in the life of their community — learning new skills, building relationships and doing things that are meaningful to them.
Each person's activities would be guided by their interests, goals, preferences, support needs and individual plan. No two people's schedules need to look the same.

Possible activities
Examples of what support could include
Community activities and events
Visiting libraries, community centers, parks or local events that match a person's interests.
Volunteer experiences
Exploring ways to contribute and give back in the community.
Communication skills
Practicing conversation, asking for help and expressing needs and preferences.
Everyday skills
Shopping, money handling, planning a day and other practical tasks in real settings.
Social connections
Meeting people, building friendships and feeling at home in community spaces.
Self-advocacy
Learning to make informed decisions and speak up about what matters.
These are examples of potential individualized activities. They are not fixed outings, guaranteed schedules or established partnerships with any organization.

The DSP role
Alongside you, not in charge of you
A direct support professional (DSP) is there to help a person participate and grow — while the person stays in charge of their own choices.
- Offering encouragement, information and options
- Helping practice skills in real situations
- Supporting communication when it's wanted
- Stepping back as confidence and independence grow
What this program is not
